There is a saying that can often be heard in the 12-Step rooms of recovery that goes “We don’t have a drinking problem, we have a thinking problem.” Now, what this means is that addiction is often about a lot more than the specific use of alcohol or other substances. Addiction tends to be related to much deeper-rooted emotional issues and traumas. This is also why case management can be so helpful when it comes to successful addiction recovery.
What Exactly Is Case Management?
Now, to better grasp the concept of case management, it can be helpful to understand the concept of a “continuum of care.” According to the article, Creating a Continuum. The Goal Is to Provide an Integrated System of Care by Dr. CJ Evashwick, “The rationale for a continuum of care is that it is appropriate for patients’ needs, demanded by today’s consumers, an organized way of maximizing the use of healthcare resources, and cost-effective for providers, patients, and payers.” Ultimately, Dr. Evashwick explains that “A continuum of care [basically] comprises services and integrating mechanisms.”
Now that we have a base understanding of the continuum of care, we can move on to a better understanding of case management. According to the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA), “Because addiction affects so many facets of the addicted person’s life, a comprehensive continuum of services [also known as case management] promotes recovery and enables the substance abuse client to fully integrate into society as a healthy, substance-free individual.” Also, “The continuum must be designed to provide engagement and motivation, primary treatment services at the appropriate intensity and level, and support services that will enable the individual to maintain long-term sobriety while managing life in the community.”
Who Is Best Suited for Case Management
When it comes to case management, the truth is that it can be beneficial to anyone who needs help navigating their addiction recovery journey. However, certain individuals do tend to benefit a bit more from case management.
These individuals include people who have less financial means for their recovery, people who have trouble with chronic relapsing, and people on the more severe side of the addiction spectrum who cannot manage multiple issues in recovery at once. But, ultimately, anyone in recovery can benefit from one-on-one case management.
What Does Case Management Look Like in Practice?
Here at Lantana Recovery, we include case management in all of our recovery plans. This is because we know that recovery is about a lot more than simply not picking up a drink or a drug. It is about how we are going to manage our recovery before, during, and, especially, after treatment.
A qualified case manager is going to be able to make sure that everything is in place when an individual chooses to enter recovery. This includes working things out with an insurance company, other issues of finance, any potential legal issues, and any complications that may arise from temporarily leaving a person’s work or school. A case manager is also going to be able to ensure that an individual stays on task and connected to their recovery plan while they are directly in treatment.
Lastly, and quite crucially, good case management will help an individual take the next right steps after treatment. This includes connecting them to a local recovery community, such as a 12-Step program. It may also include following up with them regarding their work with a therapist and/or counselor. They may also continue to work with the client on any specific legal matters that they may be dealing with as a result of their active addiction.
The Benefits of Case Management for Recovery
While some of them have already been touched upon, there are still many more benefits that are associated with good case management. These benefits include:
- Improved communication and connection skills
- Help to map out day-to-day tasks, as well as making plans for long-term goals
- Better maintaining accountability to oneself and others
- Less risk of missing something financially regarding treatment and insurance
- Always having someone to talk to when issues or struggles arise in recovery
- Help in creating or adjusting a relapse prevention plan
The Importance of Individualized and Customized Treatment Plans at Lantana Recovery
Good case management is also a critical part of both individualized and customized treatment plans. Ultimately, this is the essence of case management; to assess individual needs, and customize a plan accordingly.
Here at Lantana Recovery, we know what it means to get lost in the recovery system as a statistic. This is why we don’t see people as statistics at our treatment center. We see them as the unique individuals that they are and the unique success stories that they can become.
Here at Lantana Recovery, we aim to ensure that every patient is treated individually and given a treatment plan that addresses their individual recovery needs. Therefore, case management is utilized in each unique program we create. Case managers work with clients one-on-one to understand their needs and therefore connect them with services, treatments, and other resources that will best aid their recovery.
